Limestone And Lye

Cláudio Fontenelle

The well ran dry back in the heat of June
But the dust still finds a way to dance
I planted eyes in this hollow ground
Just to give the shadows a fighting chance

My boots are heavy with the secrets I keep
In a language only the gravel knows
A man ain't nothing but the ghost of a seed
Waiting on the rain to choose where it goes

Oh, let the fire climb the sycamore tree
And let the river drag the floor
I got a heart made of limestone and lie
I don't need mercy from the storm no more

Burn it down, let the sky turn black
If you're standing in the eye of the rain
You can't break what's already been ground to powder
You can't kill a man that's already tasted the pain

Oh, tasted the pain

The salt in the air is the only friend I have
Washing the red clay out of my eyes
I built this house on a fault line of hope
Underneath a heavy, indifferent sky

They say that gold is refined in the heat
But iron just learns how to hold the spark
I'm a flintstone rolling down a gravel road
Lighting my own way through the dark

Oh, let the fire climb the sycamore tree
And let the river drag the floor
I got a heart made of limestone and lie
I don't need mercy from the storm no more

Burn it down, let the sky turn black
If you're standing in the eye of the rain
You can't break what's already been ground to powder
You can't kill a man that's already tasted the pain

Tasted the pain
Tasted the pain, oh

I'm the rain on the dust
On the dust
I'm the rust on the iron
Rust on the iron

Still standing, still breathing
Through the smoke and the thunder, still here
Limestone and lye
Still here
