No Service Near Verona

James Hanzie

No service near Verona
Your voice disappeared somewhere past the county line
I kept saying hello into the static
Like I could pull you back somehow
Cornfields buried under February snow
Gas station coffee burning through my hands
The GPS kept rerouting everything
Except us

I drove another twenty miles
Just to hear the call reconnect
But all I got was silence
And my own breathing through the speakers
No service near Verona
No signal strong enough tonight
To fix the distance growing between us

The highway looked endless
White lines disappearing into black ice
And for a second I thought about just continuing north forever
Leaving Madison behind
Leaving all of this behind

But every road eventually circles back
To the people you can't let go of
