Tired

Just Pete

I miss being tired for a reason
Something real I could lean into believing
Now I just dress up the depletion
Make it sound like a temporary feeling

I show up soft when I need a win
A little laugh, let you pull me in
I pick my timing, I pick my tone
So you don't notice I'm not home

I say just tired, you say relax
I let you believe I'll bounce right back
It's easier than letting you see
There's nothing left you could fix in me

So I tilt my head, I play it light
You sleep better thinking I'm alright

I miss being tired for a reason
Something real I could lean into believing
Now I just dress up the depletion
Make it sound like a temporary feeling

I know exactly what to say
To make concern fade away
I turn my empty into charm
Keep it harmless, keep it calm

You think I'm busy, think I'm booked
But I just learn how not to look
At anything that pulls too near
To what I'm doing, disappearing

If I told you the truth, you'd try to stay
And I don't want you in the way
So I give you just enough of me
To feel like I'm still what you see

And you say you always seem okay
That's because I trained it that way

I miss being tired for a reason
Something real I could lean into believing
Now I just dress up the depletion
Make it sound like a temporary feeling

I miss the way I didn't choose
Not just quiet, I can't refuse
Now I smile when you ask if I'm fine
And you believe me every time
