Que o dia em que nasci pereça, e a noite em que foi dito, Há um menino concebido.Let the day perish wherein I was born, and the night in which it was said, There is a man child conceived.
Que esse dia seja trevas; que Deus não olhe para ele do alto, nem que a luz brilhe sobre ele.Let that day be darkness; let not God regard it from above, neither let the light shine upon it.

Que a escuridão e a sombra da morte o manchem; que uma nuvem habite sobre ele; que a escuridão do dia o aterrorize.Let darkness and the shadow of death stain it; let a cloud dwell upon it; let the blackness of the day terrify it.
Quanto a essa noite, que a escuridão a domine; que não se junte aos dias do ano, que não entre na contagem dos meses.As for that night, let darkness seize upon it; let it not be joined unto the days of the year, let it not come into the number of the months.

Eis que essa noite seja solitária, que nenhuma voz alegre nela ressoe.Lo, let that night be solitary, let no joyful voice come therein.
Que a maldigam aqueles que amaldiçoam o dia, que estão prontos para levantar seu lamento.Let them curse it that curse the day, who are ready to raise up their mourning.

Que as estrelas do crepúsculo fiquem escuras; que busque luz, mas não encontre; nem que veja o amanhecer do dia.Let the stars of the twilight thereof be dark; let it look for light, but have none; neither let it see the dawning of the day.

Porque não fechou as portas do ventre da minha mãe, nem escondeu a dor dos meus olhos.Because it shut not up the doors of my mother's womb, nor hid sorrow from mine eyes.
Por que não morri no ventre? por que não entreguei a alma quando saí do corpo?Why died I not from the womb? why did I not give up the ghost when I came out of the belly?
Por que os joelhos me impediram? ou por que os seios que eu deveria mamar?Why did the knees prevent me? or why the breasts that I should suck?
Pois agora eu deveria estar em paz e em silêncio.For now should I have lain still and been quiet.

Eu deveria ter dormido: então eu estaria em descanso,I should have slept: then had I been at rest,
Com reis e conselheiros da terra, que construíram lugares desolados para si;With kings and counsellers of the earth, which built desolate places for themselves;
Ou com príncipes que tinham ouro, que encheram suas casas de prata:Or with princes that had gold, who filled their houses with silver:
Ou como um nascimento oculto e prematuro eu não teria existido; como bebês que nunca viram a luz.Or as an hidden untimely birth I had not been; as infants which never saw light.

Lá os ímpios cessam de perturbar; e lá os cansados encontram descanso.There the wicked cease from troubling; and there the weary be at rest.
Lá os prisioneiros descansam juntos; e o servo é livre de seu mestre.There the prisoners rest together; and the servant is free from his master.

Por que a luz é dada ao que está em miséria, e a vida ao amargurado de alma;Wherefore is light given to him that is in misery, and life unto the bitter in soul;
Que anseiam pela morte, mas ela não vem; e a buscam mais do que tesouros escondidos;Which long for death, but it cometh not; and dig for it more than for hid treasures;
Que se alegram imensamente, quando conseguem encontrar a sepultura?Which rejoice exceedingly, when they can find the grave?
Por que a luz é dada a um homem cujo caminho está oculto, e a quem Deus cercou?Why is light given to a man whose way is hid, and whom God hath hedged in?

Eu não estava em segurança, nem tive descanso, nem estive em paz; ainda assim, a aflição veio.I was not in safety, neither had I rest, neither was I quiet; yet trouble came.
