happy new year everybody
happy birthday country joe
i resolve to do like i always do
theres an overweight man with an overweight woman on a sofa just watching tv
hes yelling his opinion at the television she looks up from her food and agrees
they got two bumper stickers on there pick up truck
they keep the pick up parked outside
one sticker says "what would jesus do?"
the other bumper sticker says "power of pride"
i was thumbing through the stations on my own television
when i came across a guy on the religous station
singing "somebodys coming" sounding whiter than me somehow
wow
it took me back in time thru dwindling joy
to when i was such a guilt ridden catholic boy
im evangelical agnostic now
i dont know what we're doing here
you don't "KNOW" what were doing here
now christians dont walk out on me just yet
you know whose name im yelling as im clutching my chest
the one my dad told me to and his told him to
and i probably pray as much or more than you do
believe? shit, every word i sing
but believing and knowing, those are two different things
and if your trying to change the way a strangers life will have to go
i believe this is where i wanna stick to what i know
which is nothing you know, nothing for sure so
just chill til the next episode
now back to the lecture at hand
seems like my neighbor wants to kill what he cant understand
i say we cant just kill what we dont understand
but i turn on my tv and see that oh yes we can
we can and we have since then dawn of man
for countless gods whose only real seeming plan
was to see to it that clinging to life was our fate
and you gotta admit that lifes pretty great
but
can we deny that its killing us?

why there's never anything the poor nail can do
or think about how unfair it is

há um homem acima do peso com uma mulher acima do peso no sofá só assistindo TV
ele grita sua opinião para a televisão, ela olha pra comida e concorda
eles têm dois adesivos no caminhonete deles
mantêm a caminhonete estacionada do lado de fora
um adesivo diz "o que Jesus faria?"
o outro adesivo diz "poder do orgulho"
eu estava passando pelos canais na minha própria televisão
quando encontrei um cara na estação religiosa
cantando "alguém está vindo" soando mais branco que eu de alguma forma
uau
me levou de volta no tempo através da alegria minguante
para quando eu era um garoto católico cheio de culpa
agora sou um agnóstico evangélico
não sei o que estamos fazendo aqui
você não "SABE" o que estamos fazendo aqui
agora, cristãos, não saiam de mim ainda
vocês sabem de quem estou gritando enquanto aperto meu peito
o nome que meu pai me disse para gritar e que o pai dele disse a ele
e eu provavelmente rezo tanto ou mais do que você
acreditar? droga, cada palavra que canto
mas acreditar e saber, essas são duas coisas diferentes
e se você está tentando mudar a vida de um estranho
acredito que é aqui que quero me apegar ao que sei
que é nada, você sabe, nada com certeza então
só relaxe até o próximo episódio
agora, voltando à palestra em questão
parece que meu vizinho quer matar o que não consegue entender
eu digo que não podemos simplesmente matar o que não entendemos
mas ligo minha TV e vejo que, oh sim, podemos
podemos e temos feito isso desde o início dos tempos
por incontáveis deuses cujo único plano real parecia
era garantir que se apegar à vida fosse nosso destino
e você tem que admitir que a vida é bem legal
mas
podemos negar que está nos matando?

se a vida é alguma coisa, é embaraçosa
um prego enferrujado em um sapato descuidado
você não pode evitar de ficar sentado e se perguntar às vezes
por que nunca há nada que o pobre prego possa fazer
ou pensar sobre como é injusto
que o sapato só vai onde precisa ir também
se você não é o garoto burro correndo por aí
você meio que tem que fazer o que nasceu para fazer
