Foi lá em outubro, eu acho que foi.It was back last October, I believe it was.
A gente ia fazer um culto debaixo da tenda nessa cidade universitária,We was going to hold a tent service off at this college town,
e chegamos lá por volta da hora do jantar no sábado.and we got there about dinner time on Saturday.
Alguns de nós acharam que devíamos comer algo antes de montar a tenda.Different ones of us thought that we ought to get us a mouthful to eat before we set up the tent.
Então descemos da caminhonete e seguimos um grupo de pessoasSo we got off the truck and followed this little bunch of people
por um pequeno pedaço de mato ali,through this small little bitty patch of woods there,
e encontramos uma grande placa que dizia: "Coma Aqui".and we came up on a big sign that says, "Get something to Eat Here."

Eu fui lá e peguei dois cachorros-quentes e um grande suco de laranja,I went up and got me two hot dogs and a big orange drink,
e antes que eu pudesse dar uma mordida na comida,and before I could take a mouthful of that food,
uma multidão de pessoas se juntou a mim e eu não consegui comer nada,this whole raft of people come up around me and got me to where I couldn't eat nothing, up like,
e acabei derrubando meu suco de laranja.and I dropped my big orange drink.
Bem, amigos, eles começaram a se mover, e não tinha muito o que eu pudesse fazer a não ser ir junto.Well, friends, they commenced to move, and there wasn't so much that I could do but move with them.

Bom, começamos a passar por todo tipo de portas e portões e sei lá o que mais,Well, we commenced to go through all kinds of doors and gates and I don't know what- all,
e eu olhei para cima de uma delas e dizia: "Portão Norte."and I looked up over one of 'em and it says, "North Gate."
Continuamos passando por ali, e logo encontramos um garoto que disse,We kept on a-going through there, and pretty soon we come up on a young boy and he says,
"Ingresso, por favor.""Ticket, please."
E eu disse, "Amigo, eu não tenho ingresso;And I says, "Friend, I don't have a ticket;
eu nem sei pra onde estou indo!"I don't even know where it is that I'm a-going!"
Bem, ele disse, "Saia rápido como puder."Well, he says, "Come on out as quick as you can."
E eu disse, "Vou fazer isso; vou voltar assim que tiver a chance."And I says, "I'll do 'er; I'll turn right around the first chance I get."

Continuamos nos movendo por ali,Well, we kept on a-moving through there,
e logo todo mundo chegou onde queria ir,and pretty soon everybody got where it was that they was a-going,
porque eles se separaram e eu consegui ver bem.because they parted and I could see pretty good.
E o que eu vi foi uma multidão de pessoas sentadas nas duas margensAnd what I seen was this whole raft of people a-sittin' on these two banks
se olhando através de um bonito pasto verde.and a-lookin at one another across this pretty little green cow pasture.

Alguém desenhou linhas brancas por todo o lugar e fincou postes,Somebody had took and drawed white lines all over it and drove posts in it,
e eu não sei o que mais,and I don't know what all,
e eu olhei lá embaixo e vi cinco ou seis prisioneiros correndo pra cima e pra baixoand I looked down there and I seen five or six convicts a running up and down
e assoprando apitos.and a-blowing whistles .
E então eu olhei lá embaixo e vi essas garotas bonitas vestindo vestidos curtosAnd then I looked down there and I seen these pretty girls wearin' these little bitty short dresses
e dançando, e pensei em sentar e ver o que ia acontecer.and a-dancing around, and so I thought I'd sit down and see what it was that was a-going to happen.

Quando eu me sentei bem, olhei lá embaixoAbout the time I got set down good I looked down there
e vi trinta ou quarenta homens correndo de um lado de um grande banheiro lá embaixoand I seen thirty or forty men come a-runnin' out of one end of a great big outhouse down there
e todo mundo onde eu estava sentado levantou e gritou!and everybody where I was a-settin' got up and hollered!
E eu perguntei a um cara que estava sentado ao meu lado,And I asked this fella that was a sittin' beside of me,
"Amigo, por que eles estão gritando?""Friend, what is it that they're a-hollerin' for?
Bem, ele me deu um tapinha nas costas e disse,Well, he whopped me on the back and he says,
"Amigo, toma uma bebida!" Eu disse,"Buddy, have a drink!" I says,
"Bom, acho que vou querer mais um suco de laranja."Well, I believe I will have another big orange.
Eu peguei e voltei a me sentar.I got it and set back down.

Quando cheguei lá de novo, vi que os homens estavam em dois pequenos grupos bem próximos,When I got there again I seen that the men had got in two little bitty bunches down there
e eles votaram.real close together, and they voted.
Eles elegeram um homem de cada grupo,They elected one man apiece,
e esses dois homens saíram para o meio do pastoand them two men come out in the middle of that cow pasture
e se cumprimentaram como se não se vissem há muito tempo.and shook hands like they hadn't seen one another in a long time.
Então um prisioneiro veio até onde eles estavam,Then a convict came over to where they was a-standin',
e tirou uma moeda e começaram a fazer sorteio ali mesmo!and he took out a quarter and they commenced to odd man right there!
Depois de um tempo, eu vi para que era o sorteio.After a while I seen what it was they was odd-manning for.
Era que os dois grupos queriam brincar com uma abóbora engraçada.It was that both bunchesfull of them wanted this funny lookin little pumpkin to play with.
E eu sei, amigos, que eles não podiam comer a abóbora porque chutaram ela a noite todaAnd I know, friends, that they couldn't eat it because they kicked it the whole evenin'
e ela não quebrou.and it never busted.

Os dois grupos queriam aquela coisa.Both bunchesful wanted that thing.
Um grupo conseguiu e deixou o outro bem bravo!One bunch got it and it made the other bunch just as mad as they could be!
Amigos, eu vi naquela noite a briga mais feia que já vi na vida!!Friends, I seen that evenin' the awfulest fight that I ever have seen in all my life !!
Eles corriam um para o outro e se chutavamThey would run at one -another and kick one- another
e se derrubavam e pisoteavam um ao outroand throw one another down and stomp on one another
e esfregavam os pés um no outroand grind their feet in one another
e sei lá o que mais—and I don't know what-
e assim que um deles se machucava,all and just as fast as one of 'em would get hurt,
elevavam ele e colocavam outro no lugar!!they'd take him off and run another one on !!

Bom, eles fizeram isso enquanto eu fiquei ali, mas logo esse garoto que disseWell, they done that as long as I set there, but pretty soon this boy that had said
"Ingresso, por favor." veio até mim e disse,"Ticket, please." He come up to me and said,
"Amigo, você vai ter que sair porque você não tem ingresso.""Friend, you're gonna have to leave because it is that you don't have a ticket."
E eu disse, "Bom, tudo bem." E me levantei e fui embora.And I says, "Well, all right." And I got up and left.

Eu não sei, amigos, até hoje, o que era que eles estavam fazendo ali,I don't know friends, to this day, what it was that they was a doin' down there,
mas eu pensei sobre isso.but I have studied about it.
Acho que era algum tipo de competição para ver qual grupo conseguia pegar aquela abóbora e correr de um lado ao outro do pasto sem ser derrubado ou pisar em algo.I think it was that it's some kindly of a contest where they see which bunchful of them men can take that pumpkin and run from one end of that cow pasture to the other without gettin' knocked down or steppin' in somethin'.
