Houve um tempo em que o mundo era jovem e nenhum homem havia pisado na face da terra, quando aconteceu que Odin, o mais importante e poderoso da dinastia dos Æsir, cavalgou pelas vastas planícies de Æsgaard para contemplar seu reino.There was a time when the world was young and no man had ever trodden the face of the earth, whence it happened that Odin, foremost und mightiest of the Æsir dynasty, rode across the vast plains of Æsgaard to feast his very eyes upon his realm.
Seu olhar caiu sobre prados verdes, vastas e densas florestas, rios e riachos abundantes em peixes e montanhas imensas cujos picos cobertos de neve se estendiam longe no céu sem fim.His gaze fell upon meadows green, vast and dense forests, rivers and streams abundant of fish and mighty whose snow-covered peaks reached far into the endless sky.

Depois de ter cavalgado por sete dias, seu olhar se fixou em uma cidade que se estendia longe no horizonte oriental, nunca antes ele havia visto essa cidade, nem achou que sua existência fosse possível, já que a única dinastia que se supunha habitar Æsgaard era a dos Æsir.After he had ridden for seven days, his gaze fell upon a city stretching far upon the eastern horizon, never before he had seen this city nor had he deemed it's existence to be possible, as the only dynasty supposed of making their home in Æsgaard was the one of the Æsir.

Odin se aproximou e se escondeu atrás de um antigo carvalho. Ele chamou seus corvos Hugin e Munin, para serem seus olhos e ouvidos, e os enviou para espiar os milagres que poderiam estar escondidos sob as muralhas da cidade. Ele viu figuras de homens, que pareciam semelhantes ao seu próprio povo, e também viu os milagres que eram capazes de realizar. Um ele viu, usando apenas os poderes de seu espírito para fazer crescer árvores em seu jardim, e viu outro usando sua vontade para chamar água cintilante da terra plana para cultivar seus campos.Odin rode closer and took cover behind an ancient oak tree. He called upon his ravens Hugin and Minin, to be his eyes and ears, and sent them forth to scry upon the miracles which might hide beneath the city walls. He saw figures of men, looking seemingly alike to his own peaople and he also saw the miracles they were able to work. One he saw, was using just the powers of his spirit to grow trees in his garden and he saw another using his will to call sparkling water frm the plkain earth to cultivate his fields.
E Odin ouviu como eles falavam entre si. Assim, ele se tornou ciente de seu nome. Eles se chamavam de "Vanir".And Odin heard how they spoke to each other. Thus he became aware of their name. They called themselves "Vanir"

Por três dias e três noites, seus corvos permaneceram na cidade dos Vanir e por três dias e três noites ele permaneceu escondido atrás do antigo carvalho. Then, when he decided to have seen and heard enough, he summoned back his messengers and turned away from Vanaheim.
Apressadamente, ele cavalgou de volta em direção aos salões sagrados de Valhalla para relatar sua descoberta...Hastily he rode back towards the sacred halls of Valhalla to give account of his discovery ...
