Era uma manhã cedo no bar,It was an early morning bar room,

Era uma grande e simpática garota.She was a big old friendly girl.

Sorrindo para o mundo.By smilin' at the world.

E ela disse: "E aí, cara, faz tempoAnd she said "hey bub, it's been awhile
Que você não aparece.Since you been around.
Onde diabos você andou escondido?Where the hell you been hidin' ?
E por que você tá tão pra baixo?"And why you look so down ?"

Mas o homenzinho só ficou ali sentado como se nunca tivesse ouvido um som.But the little man just sat there like he'd never heard a sound.

A garçonete tossiu um pouco,The waitress she gave out with a cough,
E agindo como se nada a incomodasse,And acting not the least put off,
Ela falou mais uma vez.She spoke once again.

Ela disse: "Eu não quero te incomodar,She said, "i don't want to bother you,
Considere que tá tudo entendido.Consider it's understood.
Sei que não sou nenhuma rainha da beleza,I know i'm not no beauty queen,
Mas eu escuto muito bem."But i sure can listen good."

E o homenzinho pegou sua bebida na mãoAnd the little man took his drink in his hand
E levantou até os lábios.And he raised it to his lips.
Ele tomou alguns goles.He took a couple of sips.
E contou à garçonete essa história.And he told the waitress this story.

"Eu sou o vigia da meia-noite na fábrica de ferramentas do Miller."i am the midnight watchman down at miller's tool and die.
E eu vejo o metal enferrujar, e vejo o tempo passar.And i watch the metal rusting, and i watch the time go by.
Uma semana atrás, no diner, parei pra comer um lanche.A week ago at the diner i stopped to get a bite.
E essa linda dama sentou duas cadeiras à minha direita.And this here lovely lady she sat two seats from my right.
E, meu Deus, ela era incrível.And lord, lord, lord she was alright.

"Oh, ela era tão damn bonita que aquecia o frio do inverno."oh she was so damned beautiful that she'd warm a winter's frost.
Mas ela estava muito além da solidão, e quase perdida.But she was long past lonely, and well nigh unto lost.

"Com a língua presa como um garoto da escola, eu gaguejei algumas palavras."tongued-tied like a school boy, i stammered out some words.
Mas não importava muito, porque não acho que ela ouviu.But it did not really matter much, 'cause i don't think she heard.
