Na esperança de que o Papai Noel logo chegasse.In hopes that St Nicholas soon would be there.

As crianças estavam aconchegadas em suas camas,The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
Enquanto visões de doces dançavam em suas cabeças.While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads.
E mamãe com seu lenço, e eu com meu gorro,And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap,
Já havíamos nos acomodado para uma longa soneca de inverno.Had just settled our brains for a long winter's nap.

Quando lá fora no gramado surgiu um barulho,When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
Eu saltei da cama pra ver o que estava pegando.I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Corri até a janela como um raio,Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Abri as persianas e levantei a cortina.Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

"Agora, Dasher! agora, Dancer! agora, Prancer e Vixen!"Now Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!
Em frente, Cometa! Em frente, Cupido! em frente, em frente, Donner e Blitzen!On, Comet! On, Cupid! on, on Donner and Blitzen!

Como folhas secas que voam antes do furacão,As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,

Assim, para o telhado a equipe voou,So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
Com o trenó cheio de brinquedos, e o Papai Noel também.With the sleigh full of Toys, and St Nicholas too.

E então, num piscar de olhos, ouvi no telhadoAnd then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
O trotar e o pisar de cada pequeno casco.The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
Enquanto eu puxava minha cabeça e me virava,As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Papai Noel desceu pela chaminé com um salto.Down the chimney St Nicholas came with a bound.

Ele estava vestido de peles, da cabeça aos pés,He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
E suas roupas estavam todas manchadas de cinzas e fuligem.And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot.
Um monte de brinquedos ele jogou nas costas,A bundle of Toys he had flung on his back,
E parecia um vendedor, prestes a abrir seu pacote.And he looked like a peddler, just opening his pack.

Seus olhos - como brilhavam! suas covinhas, como eram alegres!His eyes-how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
Suas bochechas eram como rosas, seu nariz como uma cereja!His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
Sua boca engraçada estava desenhada como um arco,His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
E a barba de seu queixo era tão branca quanto a neve.And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow.

A ponta de um cachimbo ele segurava firme entre os dentes,The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
E a fumaça o cercava como uma coroa.And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath.
Ele tinha um rosto largo e uma barriguinha redonda,He had a broad face and a little round belly,
Que balançava quando ele ria, como uma tigela de gelatina!That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly!

Ele era gordinho e rechonchudo, um velho elfo bem alegre,He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
E eu ri quando o vi, apesar de mim mesmo!And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself!
Um piscar de olho e um movimento de cabeça,A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Logo me fez saber que não tinha nada a temer.Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.

Ele não disse uma palavra, mas foi direto ao trabalho,He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
E encheu todas as meias, então virou-se de repente.And filled all the stockings, then turned with a jerk.
E colocando o dedo ao lado do nariz,And laying his finger aside of his nose,
E dando um aceno, subiu pela chaminé!And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose!

Ele pulou para o seu trenó, deu um assobio para sua equipe,He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
E todos voaram como a penugem de um cardo.And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
Mas eu o ouvi exclamar, antes de desaparecer,But I heard him exclaim, 'ere he drove out of sight,
"Feliz Natal a todos, e a todos uma boa noite!""Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!"
