Certa vez, havia uma vila de criaturas no fundo de um grande rio de cristal.Once there lived a village of creatures along the bottom of a great crystal river.

A corrente do rio de cristal arrastava todos os diasCurrent of the crystal river swept each day
silenciosamente sobre todos eles:silently over them all:
Sobre os jovens, sobre os velhos, sobre os ricos e puros,Over young, over old, over rich and pure,
seguia seu próprio caminho.it was going it's own way.

Todos se agarravam firmemente às pedras, aos galhos, aos entulhosEverybody clung tightly to the rocks, to the twigs, to the snags
no fundo do rio.of the river bottom.
Durante toda a vida, até a morte, sabiam que a única forma de viver -Through all life, to their dearth, they knew the only way of life -
era lutar, resistir à correnteza do rio.fighting, resisting flowing river.

Mas uma criatura disse, por fim, "Estou cansado de me agarrar. Confio na corrente.But one creature said at last, "I am tired of clinging. I trust the current.
Vou soltar, e deixar que me leve aonde quiser. Agarrando-me, vou morrer de tédio."I shall let go, and let it take me where it will. Clinging, I shall die of boredom."

Mas eles riram.But they laughed.

"Tolo! Você é um tolo! Vai morrer antes de sentir isso!"Fool! You are fool! You will die before you feel it!
Você será arruinado por esse sonho estranho de se entregar à corrente!You'll be ruined by you strange dream of surrending to the current!
Você será jogado, será rodopiado, será esmagado nas pedras!You'll be thrown, you'll be tumbled, you'll be smashed across the rocks!
Criança tola, homem estúpido! Se não se agarrar, você vai morrer!"Foolish child, stupid man! If you don't cling, you will die!"

Ignorando-os, ele respirou fundo,Not heeding them he took his deepest breath,
deixou de se agarrar e soltou.did stop clinging and let go.
Ele foi esmagado nas pedras de imediato,He was smashed across the rocks at once,
mas se recusou a se agarrar novamente.But refused to cling again.

Com o tempo, ele foi levado pela corrente,Yet in time, he was brought by the current up,
elevoou-se livre, livre do fundo.It lifted him free, free from the bottom.
Ele podia voar, podia planar no céu da correnteza!He could fly, he could soar in the heaven of the flow!
Ele estava machucado, quebrado e não sentia mais dor.He was bruised, broken and hurt no more.

E todas as criaturas gritaram:And all creatures cried:
"Veja um milagre!"See a miracle!
Veja o Messias,See the Messiah,
vindo nos salvar a todos!come to save us all!
Uma criatura como nósA creature like ourselves
mas ele voa!yet he flies!
Veja o Messias,See the Messiah,
Veja nosso Salvador!!"See our Savior!!"

"Eu não sou, - disse a criatura, - eu não sou o Messias,"I am not, - the creature said, - I am not Messiah,
Não mais Messias do que vocês são.No more Messiah than you are.
O rio se alegra em nos levantar livresRiver delights to lift us free
se apenas vocês se atreverem a soltar para as aventuras."if only you dare let go to adventures."

Mas eles gritaram ainda mais,But they cried the more,
"Você é nosso Salvador!""You are our Savior!"
todo o tempo se agarrandoall the while clinging
às pedras e entulhos.to the rocks and snags.
Ele os deixou sozinhosHe left them alone
fazendo lendas demaking legends of
um Salvador.a Savior.
