Emergence of the Primary Larva

See me born of this narrow shelter
Watch my smooth shell split
And then I tumble held by a remnant
My trusted friend
My black eyes behold
Life's dangers unfurl
Will the frost come before I can be buried

I won't become the one I intend
Until I can brave the dust below
In the heat of the blessed sun
I suspend

And there I wait
I hesitate
Harden my skin to a shell of safety
