A Hollow Promise

All lustre died
As grotesque misfortune loomed with its jagged smile
Shaped the despondent heart
This empty vessel that I am
Crawled inside a careless void
Swam against the current in vain
I was but swept with the tide
Yet I seek no absolution now
Traverse these wastelands without regret
For deep within I always knew
Carried it with me for all these years
But now it's all too late
To reverse the gears of fate

I find nothing but hopelessness
A mere reflection of what life could have been
If the flight of sleep would embrace me
In this brooding endless night
As the shades lay over me
Like a drapery of doom
Feeding these mournful memories
Like a fateful dirge in the dark at sunrise
The stark sunlight bleeds into bloodshot eyes
Promising a false tomorrow that would never come
