A minhoca era tão gananciosa, comia mais a cada diaThe worm was so greedy it ate more each day
E a cada dia comia mais, a árvore encolhiaAnd each day it ate more the tree shrank away
A minhoca era tão nojenta, não sentia vergonhaThe worm was so loathsome it felt no disgrace
Os pássaros estavam silenciados, o sol evitava aquele lugarThe birds had been silenced the sun shunned that place
E toda a floresta ficou com medo de verAnd all of the forest grew fearful to see
Qual terrível destino aguardava a árvoreWhat terrible fate lay in store for the tree

A minhoca cresceu tão monstruosa, sua ganância não tinha limitesThe worm grew so monstrous its greed knew no bounds
O cheiro era tão horrível que envenenava o chãoThe smell was so awful if poisoned the ground
E todas as criaturas que viviam na mataAnd all of the creatures that lived in the wood
Estavam doentes e famintas, a minhoca estragava sua comidaWere sickened and starving the worm spoiled their food
Os pássaros não cantavam e o sol não podia brilharThe birds would not sing and the sun could not shine
A floresta estava suja e manchada de sujeiraThe forest lay dirty and blackened with grime

Agora, lá na floresta, um jovem estava cavalgandoNow down in the forest a young man went riding
Ele passou pela grande árvore e viu que estava morrendoHe passed by the great tree and saw it was dying
As folhas e a casca estavam todas podres e cheias de pragasThe leaves and the bark were all rotten and rife
A árvore tinha sido envenenada e drenada de sua vidaThe tree had been poisoned and drained for its life
Ele arrancou um pedaço da casca da árvoreHe stripped of a piece of the bark of the tree
E logo soube qual seria o remédio certoAnd straight'way he know what the right cure should be

O homem fez uma fogueira e derrubou a árvoreThe man built a fire and chopped down the tree
A minhoca começou a gritar, não conseguia se soltarThe worm started screaming it could not break free
Ela se contorcia e se debatia, mas não conseguia escaparIt trashed and it lashed but it could net break loose
Prendida naquela árvore como um ladrão em um laçoTrapped in that tree like a thief in a noose
A minhoca estourou, um cheiro horrível se espalhouThe worm burst asunder a vile smelling crust
Ele a cortou em pedaços e a queimou até virar póHe hacked it to pieces and burnt it to dust

A floresta parecia mais clara e pacífica, finalmenteThe forest seemed clearer and peacful at last
Como depois de uma tempestade, quando as nuvens de chuva se vãoLike after a storm when the rainclouds have passed
E embora a grande árvore tenha caído e morridoAnd although the great tree was fallen and dead
Eles sabiam que das cinzas uma nova vida surgiriaThey knew from the ashes a new life would spread

Eles sabiam que das cinzas uma nova árvore iria prosperarThey knew from the ashes a new one would thrive

Agora, anos podem ter se passado desde a história que conteiNow years may have passed since the tale I have told
Ainda assim, a verdade dessa história parece se manterYet the truth of this story does still seem to hold

Que a devora com veneno e tortura sua almaThat eats it with poison and tortures its soul
A minhoca pode ser morta, mas a árvore não está mortaThe worm can be killed yet the tree be not dead
Pois das raízes do velho, uma nova vida irá surgirFor from the roots of the elder a new life will spread
