Eu sei que é muito feio citar as próprias críticas, mas gostaria de mencionar algo que o New York Times disse sobre mim há um ano e que sempre guardei com carinho -- eles disseram: "A musa do Sr. Lehrer não é limitada por fatores inibidores como o gosto".I know it's very bad form to quote one's own reviews, but I would like to mention something that the New York Times said about me a year ago which I've always treasured -- they said: "Mr. Lehrer's muse is not fettered by such inhibiting factors as taste".

Agora chegamos àquela parte peculiar da cultura americana conhecida como a canção de luta do futebol. Fui lembrado não faz muito tempo, ao voltar da minha aula com o mestre do Scrabble no clube de Harvard em Boston, dos dias da minha graduação há muito tempo, quando havia aquelas longas tardes de sábado no outono sem nada para fazer -- a biblioteca estava fechada -- apenas esperando as festas de coquetel começarem. E em ocasiões assim, alguns de nós costumávamos vagar até o... eu acredito que era chamado de estádio, para ver se algo estava acontecendo por lá. E percebia-se que as canções de luta do futebol que se ouvem em estádios semelhantes tendem a ser um tanto rudes, e até violentas, e que seria refrescante, para dizer o mínimo, encontrar uma que fosse um pouco mais gentil. E aqui está, dedicada à minha própria alma mater, e chamada Lute com Garra, Harvard.Now we come to that peculiar bit of Americana known as the football fight song. I was reminded not too long ago, upon returning from my lesson with the Scrabble pro at the Harvard club in Boston, of the days of my undergraduacy long ago when there used to be these very long Saturday afternoons in the fall with nothing to do -- the library was closed -- just waiting around for the cocktail parties to begin. And on occasions like that, some of us used to wander over to the... I believe it was called the stadium, to see if anything might be going on over there. And one did come to realize that the football fight songs that one hears in comparable stadia have a tendency to be somewhat uncouth, and even violent, and that it would be refreshing, to say the least, to find one that was a bit more genteel. And here it is, dedicated to my own alma mater, and called Fight Fiercely, Harvard.
