Eu, O Professor, era o rei sobre Israel
I, The Teacher, was king over Israel
Eu me dediquei a estudar e explorar
I devoted myself to study and explore
Pelo conhecimento, tudo que está feito sob o céu
By wisdom, all that is done under heaven
Que carga pesada Deus colocou nos homens!
What a heavy burden God has laid on men

Eu tenho visto todas as coisas que estão feitas
I have seen all the things that are done
Sob o sol, uma perseguição ao vento!
Under the Sun, a chasing after the wind!

Eu tenho visto todas as coisas que estão feitas
What is twisted can not be straightened
Sob o sol, uma perseguição ao vento!
What is lacking can not be counted

Eu me apliquei para o entendimento
I applied myself to the understanding
Do conhecimento e também da loucura e tolice
Of wisdom and also of madness and folly
Mas eu aprendi que está também
But I learned that this too
É uma perseguição do vento
Is a chasing after the wind

O que está torto não pode ser endireitado
What is twisted can not be straightened
O que está em falta não pode ser contado
What is lacking can not be counted
Com muito conhecimento vem muito sofrimento
With much wisdom comes much sorrow
Maior o saber, maior a tristeza
The more knowledge, the more grief

Eu me neguei por nada, meus olhos pedintes
I denied myself nothing, my eyes desired
Eu recusei ao meu coração nenhum prazer
I refused my heart no pleasure
Meu coração tomou deleite em todo meu trabalho
My heart took delight in all my work

E isso foi a minha recompensa pelo meu labor
And this was the reward for all my labour
Ainda quando avalio tudo que minha mãos fizeram
Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done
E o que eu tinha trabalhado para alcançar
And what I had toiled to achieve
Tudo foi uma perseguição do vento!
Everything was a chasing after the wind!

Com muito conhecimento vem muito sofrimento
With much wisdom comes much sorrow
Maior o saber, maior a tristeza
The more knowledge the more grief

O destino do tolo virá sobre mim
The fate of the fool will overtake me
O que ganho eu sendo sábio?
What then do I gain by being wise
Para o homem sábio, assim como o tolo
For the wise man, like the fool
Não será lembrado
Will not be long remembered
Nos dias que virão ambos serão esquecidos
In the days to come both will be forgotten
Como o tolo, o homem sábio também deve morrer!
Like the fool, the wise man too must die!
