E a palavra do Senhor veio a Jonas, filho de Amitai, dizendo,And the word of the lord came to jonah, the son of amittai, saying,
2 levanta-te! Vai a Nínive, aquela grande cidade, e deixa tua voz chegar até ela; pois a maldade deles subiu até mim.2 up! go to nineveh, that great town, and let your voice come to it; for their evil-doing has come up before me.
3 E Jonas se levantou para fugir para Társis, longe do Senhor; e desceu a Jope, e viu ali um navio indo para Társis: então ele pagou o preço da viagem e desceu para ir com eles para Társis, longe do Senhor.3 and jonah got up to go in flight to tarshish, away from the lord; and he went down to joppa, and saw there a ship going to tarshish: so he gave them the price of the journey and went down into it to go with them to tarshish, away from the lord.
4 E o Senhor levantou um grande vento sobre o mar e houve uma tempestade violenta no mar, de modo que o navio parecia estar em perigo de se despedaçar.4 and the lord sent out a great wind on to the sea and there was a violent storm in the sea, so that the ship seemed in danger of being broken.
5 Então os marinheiros ficaram cheios de medo, cada um clamando ao seu deus; e as mercadorias no navio foram jogadas ao mar para aliviar o peso. Mas Jonas tinha descido para a parte mais interna do navio, onde estava deitado em um sono profundo.5 then the sailors were full of fear, every man crying to his god; and the goods in the ship were dropped out into the sea to make the weight less. but jonah had gone down into the inmost part of the ship where he was stretched out in a deep sleep.
6 E o capitão do navio veio até ele e disse: O que você está fazendo dormindo? Levanta-te! Clama ao teu deus, se por acaso Deus se lembrar de nós, para que não venhamos à destruição.6 and the ship's captain came to him and said to him, what are you doing sleeping? up! say a prayer to your god, if by chance god will give a thought to us, so that we may not come to destruction.
7 E disseram uns aos outros: Vamos, lancemos sorte para ver por causa de quem este mal nos veio. E assim fizeram, e Jonas foi identificado como o homem.7 and they said to one another, come, let us put this to the decision of chance and see on whose account this evil has come on us. so they did so, and jonah was seen to be the man.
8 Então lhe disseram: Agora, nos diga claramente qual é o seu trabalho, e de onde você vem? Qual é a sua terra, e quem são seu povo?8 then they said to him, now make clear to us what is your work, and where you come from? what is your country, and who are your people?
9 E ele lhes disse: Sou hebreu, adorador do Senhor, o Deus do céu, que fez o mar e a terra seca.9 and he said to them, i am a hebrew, a worshipper of the lord, the god of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.
10 E os homens ficaram com grande medo, e disseram a ele: O que é isso que você fez? Pois os homens sabiam que ele estava fugindo do Senhor, porque ele não tinha escondido isso deles.10 and the men were in great fear, and they said to him, what is this you have done? for the men had knowledge of his flight from the lord because he had not kept it from them.
11 E disseram a ele: O que devemos fazer com você para que o mar se acalme para nós? Pois o mar estava ficando cada vez mais agitado.11 and they said to him, what are we to do to you so that the sea may become calm for us? for the sea was getting rougher and rougher.
12 E ele lhes disse: Levem-me e joguem-me ao mar, e o mar se acalmará para vocês: pois estou certo de que por minha causa esta grande tempestade veio sobre vocês.12 and he said to them, take me up and put me into the sea, and the sea will become calm for you: for i am certain that because of me this great storm has come on you.
13 E os homens se esforçavam para voltar à terra, mas não conseguiam: pois o mar se tornava cada vez mais agitado contra eles.13 and the men were working hard to get back to the land, but they were not able to do so: for the sea got rougher and rougher against them.
14 Então, clamando ao Senhor, disseram: Ouça nossa oração, ó Senhor, ouça, e não deixe a destruição nos alcançar por causa da vida deste homem; não nos ponha a culpa de tirar a vida sem motivo: pois você, ó Senhor, fez o que parecia bom a você.14 so, crying to the lord, they said, give ear to our prayer, o lord, give ear, and do not let destruction overtake us because of this man's life; do not put on us the sin of taking life without cause: for you, o lord, have done what seemed good to you.
15 Então pegaram Jonas e o jogaram ao mar: e o mar não estava mais furioso.15 so they took jonah up and put him into the sea: and the sea was no longer angry.
16 Então grande foi o medo dos homens do Senhor; e fizeram uma oferta ao Senhor e fizeram votos a ele.16 then great was the men's fear of the lord; and they made an offering to the lord and took oaths to him.
17 E o Senhor preparou um grande peixe para engolir Jonas; e Jonas esteve dentro do peixe por três dias e três noites.17 and the lord made ready a great fish to take jonah into its mouth; and jonah was inside the fish for three days and three nights.
