The Crow and the Pitcher

Under a burnin' Sun in a land dry as bone
A clever old crow was flyin' alone
Wings heavy with heat, throat parched and tight
Searchin' for water from mornin' till night
Then down in a garden, half-hidden in shade
Stood a tall clay pitcher where a drink had been laid
He perched on the rim, peered deep in the well
But the water was low, just a shimmer, a spell

He stretched out his beak, tried to dip and to sip
But the narrow neck laughed at his desperate grip
No way to reach down, no river in sight
The clever crow pondered in the heat of the light

Drop by drop, stone by stone
(Oh clever crow, you're not alone!)
Raisin' the water, inch by inch high
With a spark in his eye and a plan so sly!
Necessity's callin', invention's the key
That thirsty ol' crow showed what smarts can be!
Plink, plink, plink goes the pebble parade
Till the water rose up for the drink he craved!

He hopped to the ground where the pebbles lay round
Picked up the small ones that covered the ground
One after another, he carried 'em back
Dropped 'em in careful, no turnin' from the track
Each little stone sent a ripple so fine
The water crept higher, a victory sign
He worked without stoppin', no rest in between
Till the level was risin' like a slow-growin' dream

The Sun kept on blazin', but the crow stayed true
Knowin' persistence would pull him through
No brute force needed, no wings to flap wide
Just brains and a plan on the hot dusty side
