Looking At The Lights

When winter comes, the nights get longer
Months get colder, moods get sombre
Your heart feels low, your mind may wander
To thoughts as dark as night

You may see a tree, wonder what's the use
Maybe there's no use, just a nice excuse
For me to sit beside you on these cold and lonely nights
Surrounded by the darkness, looking at the lights

Trees don't have beliefs, they don't celebrate our dates
But we can still enjoy their boughs and breathe the air they make
And lights don't know it's Christmas but we get lost in their glow
Reminded of the Sun that warms and melts away the snow
The darkness of the winter doesn't know it feels unkind
It comes with no intention without you or I in mind

And we don't know the reasons that feelings come and go
Do they change with the seasons or mean nothing at all?

But you can sit beside me on these cold and lonely nights
Surrounded by the darkness, looking at the lights

We don't need to be okay, there's no right way to be
We can just be quiet and gaze into the tree

Spring will soon return, sadness has an end
It may be hard to see it so we'll stick close till then
And we can gather 'round a tree, you and I together
And we can dress it up in stars and huddle against the weather

And sit beside each other on the longest coldest night
