Era a noite antes do NatalIt was the night before Christmas

--pessoas que se foram, sonhos que se tornaram realidade--people that are gone, dreams that have come true
E alguns que desapareceram--And some that have vanished--

Tínhamos acabado de nos acomodarHad just settled down

Eu saltei da cama para ver o que estava acontecendo.I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter.

Lembro do papai lendo para nós à luz do fogo,I remember Daddy reading to us by firelight,
Todos nós, crianças, juntinhos, de pijama,All of us children snuggle up together, in our pajamas,
Prontos para dormir; o fogo queimando na lareira,All ready for bed; the fire burning in the grate,
O visco pendurado na porta,The Mistletoe hanging in the doorway,
As luzes piscando na árvore,The lights flickering on the tree,
Bolas de vidro e anjos brilhantes,Baubles of glass and glittering angels,
Presentes embrulhados em prata e ouroPresents wrapped in silver and gold
E verde e um vermelho brilhante e reluzente.And green and bright, shiny red.

Quando, o que meus olhos maravilhados deveriam ver,When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
Mas um trenó em miniatura e oito renas pequenas..."But a miniature sleigh and eight tiny reindeer..."

Eu soube de imediato que era o São Nick.I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.

Papai fazia suas compras na véspera de Natal,Daddy would do his shopping on Christmas Eve,
Entrando em casa, aflito e feliz,Flying in to the house, flustered and happy,
Com os braços cheios de papel prata, ouro e verde escarlateHis arms full of silver and gold and green scarlet paper
E fitas brilhantes de lamê.And bright tinsel ribbons.
Ele nos abraçava a todos e abraçava a mamãe,He would hug us all and hug mother,
Posso ouvir a risada alegre da minha mãe,can hear her my mother's joyful laughter,
Lembro do gosto de seu doce divino e fudge de chocolateremember the taste of her homemade divinity and chocolate fudge
Mais rápido que águias, seus corcéis chegaram,More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
E ele assobiou e gritou, e os chamou pelo nomeAnd he whistled and shouted, and called them by name

O brilho das velas na mesaThe glow of candles on the table
E as luzes da árvore de Natal refletidas em nossos olhos, balas de açúcar dançando em nossas cabeças,And the lights of the Christmas tree reflected in our eyes, sugarplums dancing in our heads,
O visco pendurado na porta,The Mistletoe hung in the doorway,
As luzes piscando na árvore,The lights flickering on the tree,
Bolas de vidro e anjos brilhantes,Baubles of glass and glittering angels,
Presentes embrulhados em prata e ouro e verde e um vermelho brilhante e reluzente.Presents wrapped in silver and gold and green and bright, shiney red.

Enquanto eu puxava a cabeça e me virava,As I drew in my head and was turning around,
Pela chaminé, São Nicolau desceu com um salto.Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.
Ele estava vestido de peles da cabeça aos pés,He was dressed all in fur from his head to his foot,
E suas roupas estavam todas manchadas de cinzas e fuligem.And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot.

Os presentes escondidos,The hidden presents,
As bicicletas e os trenós e as carroçasThe bikes and the sleds and the wagons
Bonecas dançantes e perfume de feno recém-cortado.Dancing dolls and New Mown Hay perfume.
Nós iríamos para a cama relutantes -We would go to bed reluctantl -
Alguém consegue dormir na véspera de Natal?,Does anybody sleep on Christmas Eve?,
Quando finalmente tivemos que ir para a cama,When we finally had to go to bed,
Eu ficava orando na cama com os olhos bem abertos,I would be praying in bed with my eyes wide open,
Oh, por favor, Deus, sem livros, sem roupasOh Please, god, no books, no Clothes

Um monte de brinquedos ele jogou nas costas,A bundle of toys he had flung on his back,
E ele parecia um vendedor abrindo seu pacote.And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.
Seus olhos como brilhavam! Seus sorrisos como eram alegres!His eyes how they twinkled! His dimples how merry!
Suas bochechas eram como rosas, seu nariz como uma cereja!"His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!"

Quando eu tinha três anos, lembroWhen I was three years old I remember
De acordar e olhar para a salaWaking up and looking out at the living room
Para a árvore brilhando, cintilante;At the tree shining bright, sparkling;
Todos os icicles pendurados assimAll the icicles hung just so
E lá estava São Nicolau comendo um biscoito de açúcarAnd there was St Nicholas eating a sugar cookie
Do prato que mamãe sempre deixava para ele.From the plate mother always left him.
Então eu vi o Papai Noel colocar minha boneca embaixo da árvore.Then I saw Santa Claus put my doll under the tree.
Ainda posso vê-lo, tão claro quanto o dia.I can still see him , as clear as day.

"...Ele tinha um rosto largo e uma barriguinha redonda"....He had a broad face and a little round belly
Que tremia quando ele ria como uma tigela cheia de gelatina.That shook when he laughed like a bowl full of jelly.
Ele era gordinho e rechonchudo - um velhinho bem alegre,He was chubby and plump -a right jolly old elf,
E eu ri quando o vi, apesar de mim mesmo.And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself.

Ele não disse uma palavra, mas foi direto ao trabalho,He spoke not a word, but went straight to work,
E encheu todas as meias---And filled all the stockings---
E colocando o dedo ao lado do nariz,And laying his finger aside of his nose,
E dando um aceno, subiu pela chaminé..."And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose..."

Todas aquelas memórias,All those memories,
Toda aquela alegria, o calor que se instala em meu coraçãoAll that delight, the warm glow that settles into my heart
Quando ouço os sinos do trenó chamando na neve que cai,When I hear the sleigh bells calling in the falling snow,
E sinto a neve no meu rosto,And feel the snow onmy face,
Quando ouço as canções de Natal e penso no meu pai,When I hear the Christmas Carols and think of my father,
Minha mãe, irmãos e irmã, minha linda família,My mother, brothers and sister, my beautiful family,
E São Nicolau,And St. Nicholas,
Eles foram os melhores de todos os Natais...They were the best of all Christmases...

"...Ele pulou para seu trenó, deu um assobio para sua equipe,"...He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
E todos voaram como a penugem de um cardo.And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
Mas eu o ouvi exclamando enquanto desaparecia da vista,But I heard him exclaim as he drove out of sight,
"Feliz Natal a todos e boa noite a todos!""Merry Christmas to all and all a Good Night!"
