Safe Haven

I remember lying flat on my back on the stairs of the corridor
I could smell the cigarettes and the white wine from right underneath the door
I was listening to my dad who played the piano
I was listening to my parents' friends who missed all the rhythm
I was at the end of preschool, I was a midnight spy
I stayed up till the Sun rose and always wondering why
They stumbled and fell

I remember the fights at the end after everybody left
I can vividly recall all the things said through the bars of the staircase

Let's just clean things up and leave for bed before the boys wake up

After all this time I finally see a shoreless sea of tranquility

The wasted hours awake in bed, a fortress was what we once had
A safe and steady haven
