Consumer Talent

To each a talent bestowed,
for most long unpolished.
But each grabs hold of something and doesn't easily let go.
Is this thing visible to the human eye?
A fad sweeps into your mind,
takes root and pleases your logic.
"Do what you love" - it says,
"Fuck those clones with dollars signs in their eyes."
The idea stays put but soon fades.
A paycheck soon comes and an addiction ensues.
On your drive to work,
the hum of the engines masks the dull drone of the growing dissatisfaction.
Most assume fads are bad.
This one leaves you despite all hope that it will not.
Your life begins when you get home.
Your life ends when you wake up.
Your child is born and the cycle begins, perhaps continues,
much to the delight of the executives down the road,
rollin in their cars that many desire but few can afford.
They sell you a life that sends you further behind,
yet you buy it all,
ads in hand,
wish lists crossed off,
with a smile on your face
and a discount sticker stuck on your heart.
