E as Musas gritaram com um clamor tempestuoso,And the Muses cried with a stormy cry,
"Não mandem mais para sempre:"Send them no more for evermore:
Deixem o povo morrer."Let the people die."

"É ele então, que caiu tão baixo?""Is it he then, brought so low?"
E o povo descuidado se aglomerou do campoAnd the careless people flocked from the field
Com uma bolsa para pagar o espetáculo.With a purse to pay for the show.

Morto, que cumpriu seu tempo,Dead, who had served his time,
Era um dos reis do povo;Was one of the peoples' kings;
Tinha trabalhado para tirá-los da lamaHad laboured in lifting them out of the slime
E mostrar que as almas têm asas.And showing them souls have wings.

Mudo na charneca invernal ele jazia,Dumb on the winter heath he lay,
Seus amigos o despiram,His friends had stripped him bare,
E espalharam sua nudez por toda parteAnd rolled his nakedness everywhere
Para que toda a multidão pudesse olhar.That all the crowd might stare.

Um poste de sinal desgastado pela tempestade não precisa ser lido,A storm-worn signpost need not be read,
E uma árvore com um ninho apodrecidoAnd a tree with a mouldered nest
Em seus ossos sem casca ficou ereta ao lado do morto;On its barkless bones stood stark by the dead;
E atrás dele, baixo no Oeste,And behind him, low in the West,
Com escadas móveis de sombra e luz,With shifting ladders of shadow and light,
E borrado em cor e forma -And blurred in colour and form -
O sol pairava sobre os Portões da NoiteThe sun hung over the Gates of Night
E encarava uma tempestade que se aproximava...And glared at a coming storm…

Então deslizou um Bedlam vorazThen glided a vulturous Bedlam forth
Que a Morte muda havia prosperado;That dumb Death had thriven;
Chamaram-a de Reverência aqui na Terra,They called Her Reverence here upon Earth,
E A Maldição do Profeta no Céu.And The Curse of the Prophet in Heaven.
Ela se ajoelhou - "Nós o adoramos!" - quase chorou,She knelt - "We worship him!" - all but wept,
"Tão nobre e grande ele era!""So noble and great was he!"
Ela limpou a visão, levantou-se,She cleared her sight, She arose,
E varreu a poeira da Terra de seu joelho:She swept the dust of Earth from her knee:

"Grande! pois ele falou e o povo ouviu,"Great! for he spoke and the people heard,
E sua eloquência pegou como uma chamaAnd his eloquence caught like a flame
De zona a zona do mundo até que sua PalavraFrom zone to zone of the world till his Word
Lhe rendeu um nome nobre.Had won him a noble name.
Nobre! ele cantou, e o doce som correuNoble! he sung, and the sweet sound ran
Por portas de palácios e casebres,Through palace and cottage door,
Pois ele tocou em todo o triste planeta do homem,For he touched on the whole sad planet of man,
Os reis, os ricos e os pobres;The kings, and the rich and the poor;

"E ele cantou sozinho não de um velho pôr do sol,"And he sung alone not of an old sunset,
Mas de um sol nascendo em sua juventude!But a sun coming up in his youth!
Grande e nobre, ó sim, mas ainda assim,Great and noble, O yes, but yet,
Pois o Homem é amante da Verdade,For Man is a lover of Truth,
"E está preso a segui-la, onde quer que Ela vá,"And bound to follow, wherever She go,
Totalmente nu, e para cima ou para baixo,Stark naked, and up or down,
Através de seus altos passes de neve imaculada,Through her high hill-passes of stainless snow,
Ou o esgoto mais imundo da cidade -Or the foulest sewer of the town -

"Nobre e grande, ó sim, mas então"Noble and great, O aye, but then
(Embora um Profeta deva ter seu devido),(Though a Prophet should have his due),
Ele era mais nobre que outros homens?Was he nobler-fashioned than other men?

Muitas vezes se curvou e se acovardou;Had often truckled and cowered;
Quando ele se levantou em sua ira e cedeu à vontade delaWhen he rose in his wrath and yielded Her will

Ela revirou seu corpo sem vida:She tumbled his helpless corpse about:
"Uma pequena mancha na pele!"A small blemish upon the skin!

É muitas vezes tão imundo por dentro!"Is often as foul within!"

Ela se agachou, rasgou-o parte por parte,She crouched, She tore him part from part,
E de dentro do corpo Ela extraiuAnd out of the body She drew
A águia de sangue vermelho do fígado e do coração;The red Blood-eagle of liver and heart;
Ela os ergueu à vista.She held them up to the view.

Ela tagarelou, enquanto tateava entre os mortos,She gabbled, as She groped in the dead,
E todo o povo ficou satisfeito;And all the people were pleased;
"Veja que coração pequeno," ela disse,"See what a little heart," she said,
"E o fígado está meio doente!""And the liver is half-diseased!"

Ela despedaçou o profeta após a morte,She tore the prophet after death,
E o povo a pagou bem.And the people paid Her well.
Relâmpagos brilharam pela charneca;Lightnings flickered along the heath;
Um gritou, "As Chamas do Inferno!"…One shrieked, "The Fires of Hell!"…
