Play House

3 stories tall, almost taller than me
Spiral staircase, a bedroom TV
Pink floral wallpaper on the walls
Wasn't bad for a Ken and a Barbie doll

In my own world, while in the other room
Mom and Dad hid what they were working through
Couldn't have been easy, I know it
To act like sunshine and roses

Truth is the older I get I realize I wasn't

The only one making things look perfect
Tying up bows in a pretty dress
Sweeping up dust and closing curtains
Life gets hard, so we pretend
That things are fine, things are good
That the roof ain't crashing down
Turns out that a little girl
Ain't the only one who knew how
To play house

My doll had a king bed, all to herself
Light blue convertible, bought from Mattel
While Dad had a rough night's sleep on the couch
Mom dreaming 'bout a day where they figure it out

It's crazy how I wasn't

The only one making things look perfect
Tying up bows in a pretty dress
Sweeping up dust and closing curtains
Life gets hard, so we pretend
That things are fine, things are good
That the roof ain't crashing down
Turns out that a little girl
Ain't the only one who knew how

To color it all and shade it in
I guess we aren't that different

I wasn't the only one making things look perfect
Tying up bows in a pretty dress
Sweeping up dust and closing curtains
Life gets hard, so we pretend
That things are fine, things are good
That the roof ain't crashing down
Turns out that a little girl
Ain't the only one who knew how
To play house
