The Hitch-hiker

On a cold deserted highway
Stood a man dressed in white
He wore sunglasses and shiny shoes
He never minded that it was night
I don't know what made me stop
I shivered as he climed in
His voice was clear as he said these words
"You'll never know where I've been".

"Well I've been standing at this crossroad
Every night to wait for you
I wanted to look good
so I'd dress like you too"
I've seen you drive your fast car
Almost hit me many times
But finally you stopped
It's time to tell you 'bout your crimes

I don't mind if you don't know me
But please don't put me off
I've been waiting for many years now
For you to turn up.
You see, I'm your only hope
If you want a daddy when life's done
So hang on to your rope
And pray for yourself, son

You see I was your best friend
When you were young and free
But you turned the other way
As you were better than me
Oh yes you came to visit
But was it me or your memories
You wanted to spend time with

My shaking body stopped the car
He was gone before I knew
