The Aquarium
Nicolas Chamillet
Glass walls, bright lights, silent room
People passing by like a slow monsoon
They point and laugh, they come closer
I think they love the things they don't know
I swim in circles, always on the same route
Every gaze fixed on my back
The funny thing about a fish like me
Is that I seem free, but they hold the key
And every face blends into the blue
Just shapes floating before my vision
In the aquarium
Everyone watches me breathe
Through the glass
As if my heart were a small exhibition
But, just like fish
I forget the hands that hurt me
So I keep swimming, swimming
As if I had nothing to lose
But here's the strange biology
Of a fragmented memory
Three brief seconds, the pain dissipates
And I go back to being naive
And every face blends into the blue
Just shapes floating before my vision
In the aquarium
Everyone watches me breathe
Through the glass
As if my heart were a small exhibition
But, just like fish
I forget the hands that hurt me
So I keep swimming, swimming
As if I had nothing to lose
Maybe that's my tragedy
Or maybe mercy has set me free
Because if I kept every scar I know
This tank would feel like a slow drowning
And every face blends into the blue
Just shapes floating before my vision
In the aquarium
Where lonely creatures shine
Through the glass again
And no one really knows
That just like the fish
I forget those who use me
So I keep swimming, swimming
